Your Mac might be turned on but appear to be turned off, even though it's connected to AC power and a working display. Follow these steps.

Download
  1. Press and hold the power button on your Mac for at least 10 seconds, then release. If your Mac is turned on, this forces it to turn off.
  2. If you see no change on your Mac, press and release the power button normally.
  3. If your Mac now turns on but doesn't finish starting up, follow the steps for when your Mac doesn't start up all the way.
  4. If your Mac still doesn't turn on, please contact Apple Support.

Creating a PDF on a Mac doesn't require any extra software, it's built right into the operating system. This quick video shows you how. In this video you'll learn how to create (and remove) a new file on your computer in the terminal command line. This is a really fast and easy process and a good one to learn when getting.

A Starving Monk Mac Os Catalina

I've been helping out a new occultationist, a graduate student at the local university. He'd like to leapfrog over the earlier technologies (camcorders) and start with a USB video converter such as the StarTech SVID2USB23, which seems to be well-thought-of around here. I loaned him mine, which works on my Early 2008 MacBook Pro running Mac OS version 10.11.6 'El Capitan' and in my Windows 10 partition on the same machine. My 'protegé' is using a 2016 MacBook Pro running Mac OS version 10.15.3 'Catalina'. It turns out the StarTech software is 32 bit, and 'Catalina' insists on 64 bit-clean software. It refuses to recognize the StarTech. Earlier versions of the Mac OS were more 'agnostic' about or tolerant of 32 vs 64 bit software.
Has anyone gotten a StarTech SVID2USB23 to work on the most recent versions of the Mac OS? If so, what was your 'trick'? Alternatively, have people found other video grabbers that work with the Mac OS that also don't drop frames, etc. My friend is a starving college student, and is loath to spend money on a second computer. I'm making 'long term loans' of a camera, an early IOTA-VTI, and other bits of hardware.

There is no 'trick' on MacOS operating system. If you have upgraded to Catalina, it will ONLY recognize 64bit. You cannot make 32bit software run on Catalina. Prior versions, e.g. High Sierra or Mojave will allow 32bit software to run, but you will get occasional warnings saying to check with software developer for 64 bit versions. I do not know if running such stuff as BootCamp or Parallels will allow 32bit Windoze software to run on the machine, as I do not go there. I just use a PC laptop for most IOTA stuff.

Thanks, Rob,
Are there other Video-to-USB converters that people have found work well (i.e., no dropped frames, etc.)?

I’ve been using the one from Orion, but it has the same
32/64 driver problem, so I have a laptop running the older
OS for occultation stuff.

Probably the simplist thing to do is downgrade to Mojave (the OS before Catalina), which will still run 32 bit apps.

I'll suggest that. StarTech's support page says they're waiting for the chip manufacturer to develop more advanced drivers.
