The History

of Clan MacRae

The name Macrae is derived from the Gaelic 'MacRaith', meaning 'Son of Grace'. Clan Macrae are believed to originate in Ireland and share a common ancestry with clan Mackenzie and and clan Maclean. Historic allies of the MacKenzies, when the MacDonalds of Sleat besieged Eilean Donan castle as part of their attempt to restore the Lordship of the Isles, it was a MacLean clansman who brought down the MacDonald chief with an arrow.
The Macrae clan motto is 'Fortitudine' and the clan crest is an arm holding a sword aloft.

The Year was 834.
