Adderall Dosage for ADHD
In general, the dosage of Adderall should not be more than 40 mg per day total. The first dose of the day should be taken first thing in the morning. If taking Adderall two or three times a day, the next doses should be given after four to six hours.
Adderall Dosage for Narcolepsy
The dosage of Adderall for adults with narcolepsy is usually 5 mg to 60 mg per day (divided up into two or three doses). For people 12 and older, the starting dose of Adderall for narcolepsy is 10 mg daily (increased by 10 mg per week if needed).

For more details it is recommended to talk to the doc./pharmacist who prescribed the med, take care, be well & safe!

Does anyone know the source of this information:

I suffer from Narcolepsy and my insurance will now not approve Adderall because it is not an approved medication by the FDA as treatment for Narcolepsy even though I have been on it for years. I contacted the FDA and they confirmed this and I am trying to find some documentation that states Adderall is used to treat Narcolepsy so I can appeal the insurance company's decision.

Narcolepsy- ask your doctor about maybe trying you on ProVigil. My doctor only prescribes to those with narcolepsy.

I'm currently taking generic for adderall xr (for narcolepsy). Since losing my prescription coverage, could not afford the brand adderall xr. However, I took it for years. The maximum dose approved by FDA law, is 120mg per day. That is the dosage I take, as my narcolepsy is severe. The pharmacist is required by law, to contact your physician by phone to confirm the accuracy of the script, as well as the physicians dea#. They will not fill the script, until they've personally spoken to the doctor on the phone.

When Shire Pharmaceuticals stopped their Patient Assistance program for adderall xr, it changed my quality of life. (The cost would have been $900 per mth for my script). I have no energy and unable to complete daily tasks, most of the time. Generic drugs are not as effective as brand!

Well I hope that answered your question. Have a great day!

Doc tried my at 30XR, then to 30XR AM and 30XR PM. We found for me I take 2X30XR in AM and 1X30XR at 250PM. We tried it at 120MG in a day but just a little too much.

Narcolepsy

BTW The doc had never seen a score of 90 on a test that was given to me.

I had thought it was 40mg, but apparently 120mg from one of the other responses. I've been taking 40mg a day along with 80mg Celexa (GAD/Depression) for about a week and haven't noticed a thing.I should say I've been taking the Celexa for about a month, and the Adderall 40mg is a new addition. Still, no effects from either - seems odd.

The prescribing information advises me not to prescribe over 60mg daily

However, each patient is different.

The answer is not more adderall. I am a 28 year old 215lb male and am on 20mg IR twice a day. Your body will build up a tolerance which will not only require you to take more but change the 'feeling' of taking it as well. There is little evidence to support your body benefiting from more than 20mg IR in a single dose (about 40 mg XR.) You have built up a high tolerance. You need to reduce your tolerance through several steps.

Please read the entire post, I promise it will help you.

First, you need to get a in depth heart exam to make sure you are healthy enough for that much amphetamine.

Here are some things that will greatly help your adderall be most effective:

Stay hydrated- A hydrated body will always work better since it's vital to maintain a certain level of water in our body due to it's high water composition %. If you are dehydrated your medication will be less or even adversely effective.

Exercise- (20 min at least 3 times a week, preferably 6 times a week) this will infuse oxygen into your blood and help the medication not only be dispersed better but increase it's potency. You should exercise BEFORE you take adderall as this will not only prevent strain on your heart but will prep your blood with tons of oxygen. Adderall taken after exercise will have noticeable results in both smoothness and efficacy.

Try to do interval type workouts (circuits on a track, Intense workout for 30 seconds (pushups, jumping jacks, squat jumps etc) and break for 2 min. This is not only the best workout to increase oxygen in your blood but is the best workout for your heart as well. When you take amphetamines your heart goes up and down in rate around your dosing. Interval workouts mimic this. You should aim for 80-90% maximum heart rate over about a 30 second period and then a 2 or 3 min cooldown to 60% maximum heart rate then back up to 80-90%. Do this for 20 to 30 min 3-6 times per week.

Your specific maximum heart rate is about 175 so you want to take your heart rate to about 160 then back down to 105, then back up again for 20-30 min. Anyone can calculate this by taking 220 and subtracting your age. Then just multiply that number by .9 for 90% and .6 for 60% to find your range.

Healthy Diet- Fruits vegetables and lots of whole wheat and Beans. You can get plenty of protein from eating beans and whole wheat as well as fish- which is also really good due to omegas found in it (good for heart and brain health) but this can be supplemented with Fish oil with about the same effect.

Do not consume citric acid one hour before or after you dose (oranges, lemons, limes etc) as this will make your stomach more acidic and your adderall less effective. I really like to have a fruit smoothie (frozen fruits, oatmeal, half an avocado (good fat), 2 tablespoons of natural almond butter (good fat) (no sugar etc added), water or milk and then blend it all up) I usually lose my appetite somewhat and this really helps get fantastic nutrition in my system in an easily consumable form.

Avoid- sugars (juice, sweets etc) bad fats (greasy foods), lack of sleep. Sleep deprivation will seriously reduce the effectiveness of amphetamines, you are much more likely to become grouchy and go into 'amphetamine zombie mode' as well as feel much less of the effects.

Supplements-If you want to take supplements try Magnesium and zinc. They help reduce calcium build up in neural pathways which contributes to increased tolerance. Magnesium is incredibly important for many functions of the body. Also fish oil has been highly regarded in both heart and brain health. Take these at night when you come down as they aid in sleep as well and can be available for you body to use while it repairs itself (sleep)

Drug Holiday- It's also not a bad idea several times a year to take a 'drug holiday' for 7 to 30 days where you don't take any adderall. This will by far be the most effective thing you can do. Just make sure to cut your dose in half each day until you are under 10 mg a day or else you will very likely detox, which will probably make you sleep for 16 hours or more and make you feel terrible.

I love adderall because it makes me literally about 250-300% more productive than normal. These are all things that have helped me personally and I use on a regular basis.

I also see this thread is older. But for anyone who may be linked here, I too have been on 120mg XR throughout the day and as far as I know the max dose is 120mg XR. I'm like the one first posting on 120mgs, severely narcoleptic w/mild cataplexy diagnosed about 12-14 mo ago.I'm 32 now and I've been healthy (gymnast for 10yrs), I have one 4 year old son and, well nothing amazing or out of the ordinary (let me say in my world my son has hung the moon, I only mean that in 'relevance') I have zero hereditary ties to Narcolepsy, not even a child to a 2nd cousin (thank god, but my list is checked). My pain management docs (arthritis in lower facet joints since 18-19) were seemingly always doing labs and I know a lupus lab was ordered on 3 diff occasions. Well that's figured out and it doesn't matter I won't take opioids unless right out of surgery anyhow.

I guess I'm looking for the golden egg idk!? How do you go from happy rested normal to MSLT (actually 2, switch docs and they didn't seem to play nice) result/s of 3.4 seconds, misserable tired exhausted in such a small window of time?! Before everyone jumps, I do 'know' and 'understand' this disease, what any educated non-doctor can. I just have to wonder sometimes, is this as good (or bad) as it gets?! I'm angry at this disease, it's taken so much, but not on the physical surface. So no one knows I feel awful, until I broadcast it! You've seen all my sides when you've seen me fall asleep walking to the living room or rinsing a dish off in the sink. I think I've hit my head more in the last two years than my 4yr old!!! soooooooooosleepy

I just have heard that 30mg xr is the highest capsule available... But if not needed I could see it being and heard it is very addictive. If it makes you speed does that mean you shouldn't take it?How do you know if you need it?

BsubsN1119 Nov 2012

Yes, that is true that is the highest dose available for both adderall xr and adderall. It is good that you are cautious, however if you were prescribed it from a doctor who asked you some questions and talked with you for a while, I would give it a try. If your asking about it, seeing a doctor, etc; than you probably have reasonable cause for this drug to be beneficial to you. If your studying at your friends house and your tired, so he/she offers you an adderall, than thats a different story.
