Astronomy Software: Starry Night for Mac Jeffery Adkins - 2001. – This is the second in a series of reviews of planetarium software for the Macintosh, with emphasis on its use in schools. Planetarium software, at a minimum, simulates the appearance of the night sky given certain parameters such as the date, time, and observer location. You can also display your slew horizon in the Starry Night sky. The 'Quick Center' function immediately centers Starry Night on the telescope position indicator. And for Macintosh users, the 'Telescope Handbox Simulator' allows you to push the direction arrows in.

Redshift 7 Premium is a comprehensive guide to the heavens. A huge panorama of the Milky Way, photo-realistic horizons and a 3-D flight out of our galaxy are only a few ways in which Redshift turns astronomy into a breathtaking and inspiring experience. Countless unique features such as telescope and joystick control, over 100 multimedia tours, macro recorder to create your own tours, online access to the Digitized Sky Survey and Google Maps, high quality videos, animations and the extensive help make Redshift 7 Premium the indispensable guide to the night skies.

Sky Survey

The ultimate planetarium is the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey, a set of images covering the entire sky taken with professional telescopes. The printed version is extremely expensive but it has now been digitized and is available in 10x compressed form on the Web from STScI and NASA and in 100x compressed form on 10 CDROMs from ASP. The CDROM version can be accessed from TheSky and several others; the online version can be accessed from Starry Night and a few others.

Space Holdings Software is showing a pre-release version of Starry Night X at this week’s Macworld Conference & Expo in New York City. It’s the newest addition to the Starry Night family of space and astronomy software “for anyone with an interest in space or the night sky, from first-time stargazers to dedicated amateur astronomers.”

Starry Sky Mac OS

Starry Night X can model the night sky from anywhere on earth, at any date or time. New features in Starry Night X include enhanced telescope control capabilities, new databases of stars and galaxies, an observation planner, multimedia movies featuring astronomy experts, and much more. With the graphics technologies in Mac OS X, like QuickTime and OpenGL, Starry Night X offers more features than ever before, said Ted Leckie, founder of Space Holdings Software.

OpenGL graphics technology allows Starry Night X to render 3D views of planets, moons and asteroids quickly, he added. Over an hour of QuickTime movies takes you through larger and larger orbits exploring celestial objects, their composition and their origins with multimedia from the world’s largest telescopes. Users will also have the power to create their own QuickTime movies of the universe using Starry Night X. The final version of Starry Night X will ship this fall.
