This article describes how to install Thunderbird on Mac. For other operating systems, see Installing Thunderbird on Windows and Installing Thunderbird on Linux.Before you install Thunderbird, check that your computer meets the System Requirements.

Open the Thunderbird free download page, which detects the platform and language of your computer and recommends the best edition of Thunderbird for you. Click the download link or button. (If you want to download Thunderbird in a language other than the one suggested, click on 'Other Systems & Languages' for the list of available editions. Click on the OS X installation of your choice to continue.)

Once the download is completed, the disk image may open by itself and mount a new volume which contains the Thunderbird application. If you do not see the new volume, double-click the Thunderbird dmg icon to open it. A Finder window appears, containing the Thunderbird application. Drag the Thunderbird icon to the Applications folder. Now eject the disk image by selecting it in a Finder window and pressing the command+E keys or by using the Finder's File menu, and selecting Eject.

Thunderbird is now ready for use. Open the Applications folder and start by double-clicking on the Thunderbird icon. You may get a security warning that Thunderbird has been downloaded from the Internet. Because you downloaded Thunderbird from the official site, you can click to continue.

  1. Don't have two Thunderbolt displays here, but I cannot restart my MacBook Pro running Big Sur unless I first disconnect the Thunderbolt display. Once the Mac boots up, if I then connect the Thunderbolt display, things are fine until I try to restart again on the Mac. Then I have to unplug the Thunderbolt display first so the Mac can boot up.

The first time you start Thunderbird you will be alerted that it is not your default email application.   • If you fail to install Thunderbird to the Mac applications, every time Thunderbird starts it will not have remembered your provious session settings - it will ask you to create email accounts, or otherwise indicate that it has no data. You must drag the Thunderbird dmg file/icon to the Mac Applications folder.

Mac OS X Driver Installation

Mac OS X

  1. Download the driver for Mac OS X.
  2. Locate the downloaded file in the Finder, control-click and select Open.
  3. Click Open to confirm.
  4. Click Continue and follow the installation wizard.
  5. Click Install to install the driver.
  6. Enter the username and password for your computer and click Install Software.
  7. Click Close to complete the installation
  8. Reboot your computer.
  9. Connect the network adapter to your computer.
  10. Go to Preferences > Network and your new Ethernet adapter should now be available.

Important information for macOS High Sierra (macOS 10.13) and above

  1. If you are using macOS 10.13 or higher and you have followed the instructions above to install the driver but your Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter does not show up on the list of network devices, please check the system report on your Mac to see if the driver has been installed succesfully. If it says No, the driver might be blocked due to security reasons. This could be caused by third-party software like Jamf Pro or by the secuirty settings of macOS.
  2. You might also get a warning prompt at this time saying that the system extension is blocked.
  3. Go to Preferences > Security & Privacy.
  4. If the settings are currently locked, click on the lock first to make the following changes. Set the security settings to allow apps downloaded from 'App Store and identified developers'. If necessary, disconnect and re-connect the network adapter and then click Allow to unblock the driver and allow it to load.
  5. The driver should now load correctly and from this point forward, the network adapter will be recognized automatically.

Missing Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter

  1. If you have followed all the instructions above to install the driver but your Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter does not show up automatically on the list of network devices, please add it manually.
  2. Go to Preferences > Network. Click on the little plus sign in the bottom left corner and select the new adapter (e.g. Thunderbolt Ethernet Slot 1).
  3. Name the new network device and click Create to add it to the list.

Uninstalling the network driver

  1. For macOS 10.14 and above, locate the driver at /System/Library/Extensions/tn40xx.kext and for older systems, locate the driver at /Library/Extensions/tn40xx.kext.
  2. Drag and drop the driver into the trash.
  3. Restart your computer.

  2. Double click on the setup.exe file to start the installation.
  3. Click Next to start the installation wizard.
  4. Click Install to install the driver.
  5. Wait until the driver installation has been completed.
  6. Click Finish to complete the installation.
  7. Reboot your computer.
